Overview

The red deer is the UK's biggest wild animal, with stags weighing up to 190 kilograms and carrying branched antlers that can span over a metre. In autumn, rival males gather harems on open ground and bellow — a deep, guttural roar that carries across Highland hills and English parkland alike.

Red deer live in separate herds for much of the year, splitting by sex until the rut brings stags crashing together in antler clashes. Hinds give birth to spotted calves in late spring, hiding them in bracken while the herd grazes nearby.

Habitat

Scottish Highlands, Exmoor, the New Forest, and managed parkland like Richmond Park hold Britain's red deer. They favour open moorland beside woodland cover, moving to sheltered valleys in harsh weather.
